How to Survive a Storm
Storms can be heavy and deadly. When
there is a storm the sky becomes dark, it’s windy, there are lightning, thunder
and a heavy down pour. There are times in our lives that we go through such
periods and all that we can see are the darkness, heavy down pour, wind,
lightning and thunder. It’s deafening and we can’t hear ourselves speak let
alone hear God speak to us.
A Storm has the ability to make us
focus solely on it and push us to the defensive rather than be on the offensive.
Some storms can paralyse and cause us to lose sight of who is most important,
Jesus.
Peter Walks on
Water
The Gospel of Matthew and Mark
recounts how Jesus walked on water. Matthew’s account records Peter’s request to
walk on water. Jesus asked Peter to come to Him upon his
request.
And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water. And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me. Matthew 14:28-30
So long as Peter kept focused on
Jesus he continued to walk on water defying the laws of nature.
Peter Almost
Drowns
However when he shifts his attention
to his environment, “…when he saw the wind boisterous” fear entered him and so
he began to drown. As he took his eyes off Jesus he lost sight of the miracle
that he had just witnessed and experienced. He forgot that Jesus had power over
nature. When he took his eyes of Jesus he stopped seeing the power of the Lord
and so became overwhelmed.
The Best Way to Go through a
Storm
The best way to get through a storm
is to stay focused on Jesus, the author and finisher of your faith. Think on His
goodness and everything He has brought you out of. Stay your eyes on Him and
bring into remembrance the testimonies that He has given you.
David faced Goliath and defeated him
while the whole army of Israel hid in fear because He remembered what the Lord
had done for him. The Lord had strengthened him to kill a lion and other
dangerous animals while he took care of his father’s sheep. He faced Goliath
and won because he didn’t forget the Lord’s power.
Be still and don’t be afraid because
God is with you even in the storm and I promise you you’re stronger than the
storm.
Speak to your
storm.
And, behold, there arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves: but he was asleep. And his disciples came to him, and awoke him, saying, Lord, save us: we perish. And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm.Mt 8:24 –26
Don’t be afraid because Jesus is with
you every step of the way. What storm are you going through? What are your
testimonies?
