Why You Should Speak in Tongues

by - 08:00:00

Do you pray in the language of the spirit? Have you received the baptism of the Holy Ghost accompanied by speaking in tongues? I speak in tongues and I love it.

Speaking in tongues or the language of the spirit is very important in the life of every believer. However this gift of the spirit has generated a lot of debate in Christiandom. There are varying schools of thought on speaking in tongues. Some posit that speaking in tongues is not necessary, while others believe that speaking in tongues is not for everyone. Still some others confuse the gift of diverse tongues with speaking or praying in tongues.

I believe in speaking in tongues or praying in the language of the spirit. The Apostle Paul says;
What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.1Corinthians 14:15
He goes on to say that;
I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all 1Corinthians 14:18
Though the 14th chapter of 1st Corinthians has been interpreted to mean that speaking in tongues is not relevant I don’t believe this is what the Apostle Paul meant. He writes
Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.1Cor 14:39
Paul isn’t against speaking in tongues but rather gives instructions as to how the gift of diverse kinds of tongues must operate. In chapter 12 he focuses on the gifts of the Spirit.
To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: 1Co 12:10(KJV)
If someone operates in the gift of diverse kinds of tongues, his message must be interpreted since it’s for the church.
If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret. But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God. 1 Corinthians 14:27-28
If there is no one to interpret then he must speak to himself and God. When you pray or sing in the spirit you speak directly to God. It is a personal thing.
For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.1Corinthians 14:2
Speaking in tongues has so many benefits. Speaking in tongues sharpens your awareness of the spiritual realm and makes it easier for you to operate in the supernatural realm. It builds up your body both physically and spiritually. It releases the power of the Holy Spirit in you. It causes you to experience growth in your life and ministry as you become more spirit minded than carnal.

I remember watching a testimony by Frances Hunter. She spoke about how her healing ministry changed after she received the baptism of the Holy Ghost and spoke in tongues. She and Charles recorded many miracles after speaking in tongues and experienced growth in their ministry. Before speaking in tongues, they struggled to get people healed in their meetings but all that changed when they spoke in tongues.

Also in the book of Acts the apostles usually prayed for new converts to receive the baptism of the spirit. Speaking in tongues is very important.

Do you want to speak in tongues? It’s a free gift from God and so all you have to do to speak in tongues is to pray and open your mouth by faith and let God fill your mouth with His language.

Do you speak in tongues? How has speaking in tongues changed your life and prayer?
