Righteousness is a gift
Righteousness is not earned but rather a gift from God under grace.
For if by the one man's offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ. Romans 5:17(NKJV)
If righteousness is earned by your deeds then it ceases to be a gift and becomes an entitlement or payment. However, thanks be to God that righteousness is a gift!
Abraham, the father of faith, was declared righteous by God not as a result of his works but rather because of his faith.
For what does the Scripture say? "Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness." Now to him who works, the wages are not counted as grace but as debt. But to him who does not work but believes on Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness. Romans 4:3-5 (NKJV)

David in the Old Testament foresaw and celebrated the day that God will not impute the sins of men to them.
Just as David also describes the blessedness of the man to whom God imputes righteousness apart from works: "Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven, And whose sins are covered; Blessed is the man to whom the LORD shall not impute sin." Romans 4:6-8 (NKJV)
Righteousness is a gift that must be accepted and not worked for.
For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God. For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes. Romans 10:3-4 (NKJV)

You need to submit yourself to God’s righteousness by accepting it. Don’t try to work for something that has already been purchased for you by Jesus. If you try to work for your righteousness, you’ll be frustrating the grace of God.
I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain. Galatians 2:21(KJV)

Don’t try to attain your righteousness by following and obeying the law because it doesn’t work that way.
And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith. Philippians 3:9
Your righteousness is dependent on what you believe. If you believe that you’re a sinner even after accepting Jesus as your Lord and personal saviour, you will continue to live in sin. However, if you accept what God says about your righteousness and meditate on it then you’ll be transformed to live life as a righteous person. Right believing is what produces right living not works or self-effort.
In order to help you meditate on your righteousness in Christ, I’ve put together scriptures on righteousness for your use. Pray and confess these scriptures and grow in your understanding of your righteousness. Click here to download it.
