Happiness is a Choice
Php 2:14-15 Do all things without murmurings and disputings:15 That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;
When you’re young you have loads of dreams and answers for how
to make the world a better place for all. You wish you were all grown up so that
you can make a difference. However as the years come and go and you find
yourself all grown up, you may not be the person you wished you would be. You
may not be in the career that you wished or even have the kind of life that you
dreamt about having. You may be in a state where you find what you do as
insignificant. You may even feel unappreciated.
Yet it doesn’t matter where you are or what you’re doing at
this moment, this is because you’re significant and important. Find joy in doing
all that you have to do. The scripture quoted at the beginning of this post
entreats us to “Do all things without murmurings and disputings….” This is
important to remember and encourage yourself with. Whether you’re a stay at home
mum, a waitress or stuck in a job that you hate, decide to be joyful. You may
not be able to see the impact you’re making but I promise you you are.
Let me illustrate this with a story. There is a woman who works
at a shop in the mall. She hates her job and complains about how she hates her
job (she can’t just stop complaining to her friends and family). She had
initially accepted the job because she thought she would find something better
to do later. After so many years she realised that she was stuck at a job she
hated. From my perspective the woman had two options either to stay happy and
choose to do her job with joy or spend the rest of her days being grumpy and
bitter. She chose the later. However there were people who went to shop at her
store simply because of her! They loved speaking to her because she had such a
lovely personality. One shopper in particular always came into the shop when it
was less busy so that he could hang out with his favorite shop attendant. Rather
than appreciate her job and how many people came by just to see her, she chose
to see the negative.
The mistake most people make is that they dwell on everything
that is wrong at any given moment rather what is right. There may never be a
moment when everything is right for you to be happy. Focus on what’s important
even in the insignificant chores that you have to do. See everything you do as
though you’re doing it unto the Lord. You may not be where you want to be but
you can be happy where you are. Happiness does not lay in things or in others.
Happiness is a choice, decide to be happy.
Be encouraged to be happy and do all that you do with the right
heart.
